CHAPTER TWELVE

Continental Gardens, Gray and Genevieve’s Apartment

Sunday after the Halloween Party

The last truckload was staged with the things Gray and Genevieve would need to live at Enzo’s for the duration of her treatment. Luigi, Alberto, Giuseppe, Carlo, and Jack were going to the storage unit. Bobby and his friends were off to take Kitty to the park and to play soccer while the weather held up, leaving Enzo and Gray to do minor repairs, clean the apartment, and vacuum the carpets. There wasn’t much to do. Gray had kept the place spotless and in good condition.

“I see no reason why we can’t turn this place back over to the superintendent today. He can come inspect, and the office should be able to issue you a check for your deposit plus interest next week.” Enzo wrapped the cord around the old vacuum.

“Putting that money in the bank will go a long way to help Mom and me get started again when this is over. I know the cancer will return, but hopefully not for eight or nine years and if it’s really successful, maybe fourteen like Brigit said. That was the average from the studies done,” Gray said to Enzo as he wiped the Formica counters with old-fashioned Jubilee Kitchen Wax.

Enzo grabbed the rag, put it down on the counter, and then pulled Gray into his arms. “Baby, it doesn’t have to be antiseptic, just clean.”

“I’m obsessing, aren’t I?” Gray’s voice sounded small and tired.

“Yes, you are. I’ll give you something else to obsess about.” Enzo gently pulled Gray’s face close and brought his mouth down, level to his lips. Gray raised his gaze to Enzo’s, his eyes wide. He kissed Gray until his lips parted, then he brushed Gray’s mouth with his tongue. Enzo held the back of Gray’s head and explored his mouth, enjoying the taste and feel of his love’s skin. “Consider that a down payment on the future.” Enzo winked, picked up the vacuum, then took it downstairs and outside to the dumpster.

The Sunset Club

Sunday, November 13 (two weeks later)

Slammed all weekend because Friday was Veterans Day, Gray looked forward to his two days off. His mom showed visible signs of improvement with Marjorie, Lacey, and Phina feeding her small meals six to seven times a day. He stood across from Enzo, who sat in his usual seat at the end of the bar.

“You’ll be returning to work in two weeks. You should go somewhere or do something before you have to go back,” Gray said as he wiped down the bar.

“I’m not going back until Genevieve is finished with her treatment.”

Gray stopped polishing the drains and faced Enzo. “Don’t neglect your business on our account. I feel bad enough as it is that you’ve spent half your vacation taking care of Mom and me. You have a business to run.”

“I hired good people. It’s time to give them space to do their jobs.” Enzo sipped on his beer.

“What if they do something you don’t like?” Gray persisted.
